Plasterboard & Gyprock Ceiling Replacement in Perth
Licensed, insured, and quoted in writing within 48 hours. We tell you straight whether it can be saved.
Plasterboard is the industry standard for residential ceiling replacement in Perth, and for good reason. It's dimensionally stable, accepts set compound well, and when installed and finished properly, produces a ceiling that's flat, smooth, and will last decades.
What separates a good plasterboard ceiling from a poor one is the installation. Sheets that aren't properly fixed, joints that aren't adequately backed, or set work rushed to save time, these produce a ceiling that shows its faults within a year.
We use 10mm Gyprock CD as standard for residential work, 13mm for longer spans, and 10mm Fyrchek where fire rating is required. Every job is set to the specified level and handed over paint-ready.

What we actually install
The product choice and installation method matter. Here's what goes into a standard residential ceiling replacement.
| Product | Thickness | Use case | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gyprock CD | 10mm | Standard residential, bedrooms, living, hallways | Industry standard, dimensional stability, accepts set well |
| Gyprock CD | 13mm | Long spans >600mm batten spacing, or heavy cornices | Reduces deflection across wider spans |
| Gyprock Fyrchek | 13mm | Garage ceilings, fire-rated separating walls | 30-min fire resistance, required by code in some applications |
| Gyprock Superchek | 10mm | Wet areas (though most Perth ceilings don't need this) | Moisture-resistant core for humid environments |
Fixing method, screws, not nails
Nailed plasterboard ceilings were the norm for decades, and they're also why many Perth homes from the 1980s have nail-pop issues. We screw all sheets to the strapping.
Which finish level do you need?
The 'set level' is the standard of joint treatment and finishing applied to the plasterboard. It's specified in AS/NZS 2589, the Australian standard for plasterboard finishing.
| Level | Description | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Tape embedded in joint compound, minor tool marks acceptable | Fire-rated assemblies, concealed spaces |
| Level 2 | Level 1 + one coat over tape, fasteners and beads | Garages, warehouses, non-occupied areas |
| Level 3 | Level 2 + additional coat. Suitable for medium-texture paint | Bedrooms, low-traffic areas, rental properties |
| Level 4 | Level 3 + final coat, skim, lightly sanded. Suitable for flat/low-sheen paint | Living areas, hallways, standard residential finish |
| Level 5 | Level 4 + skim coat over entire surface. Suitable for gloss or semi-gloss | High-specification finishes, gloss feature ceilings |
For standard flat or low-sheen paint, which is most Perth homes, level 4 is the right spec. Level 5 is significantly more labour-intensive and is only justified for gloss paint or when you want a showroom-quality surface. We'll recommend the appropriate level for your situation.
How the job runs
Old sheets stripped
Existing ceiling comes down. Strapping is inspected, corroded or failed furring is replaced before new sheets go up.
Strapping run straightened
New metal furring channel is run at correct batten spacing and levelled before sheet installation begins.
Sheets measured, cut, lifted
Sheets are cut to fit, lifted into position with ceiling jacks or stilts, and screwed to the strapping run.
Joints and fasteners set
All butt joints, cornice returns, and screw heads are filled, coated, and brought up to the specified level across multiple coats.
Sand and clean
Dried set work is lightly sanded, dust cleaned up, and ceiling inspected under raking light before handover.
Paint-ready handover
You get a ceiling that's ready for your painter, no touch-ups, no lumpy joints, no visible screws.
